I take pride in building technically excellent websites. I strive to build websites that load fast, display consistently on a wide variety of browsers and devices, can scale for enterprise-level traffic if needed, and that can be easily managed by you or your team on a day-to-day basis.
That all begins with industry leading…
Software and hosting.
I build websites using WordPress. WordPress powers literally 25% of the websites in existence today and that number continues to grow.
WordPress is an open-sourced content management system. That means it is managed by a community of web developers. This results in a product that is constantly receiving new features and security updates to remain on the cutting edge.
WordPress uses something called a “theme” to display the front end website that you see when you visit your domain. I build websites using the Genesis theme from StudioPress.
Genesis is known as a “theme framework.” It manages your website’s HTML (the skeleton that encompasses all of the content on your website) while allowing me to build a child theme which will display the aesthetic design and any custom functionality and/or content that is unique to your website.
In short, Genesis provides one click updates for you to easily keep your website up to date with important web standards with minimal updates to your front end content and aesthetics. This extends the life of your website while saving you time and money.
Also, it’s important to note, while Genesis does have cost associated with it, my license allows me to distribute it to my clients free of charge.
I host all of my web properties with WP Engine. If you’re going to run a WordPress website you should be hosting with WP Engine.
They are a WordPress-only host. This means everything they do is designed to optimize WordPress. When you call support, you are immediately speaking with a WordPress expert. It’s hard to overstate just how important that is.
They also provide proprietary caching, security and server architecture designed specifically for WordPress. Did I mention that full daily website backups and malware diagnosis/removal are included at no extra cost?
At $300 annually for the entry-level hosting package, WP Engine is a bit pricier than some other hosting packages, but it is completely worth it. Considering that going to a third party for site backups and malware service (both of which you really, really need) will cost you at least $200 annually, WP Engine’s price point should quickly become a bit more palatable.
WordPress, Genesis and WP Engine will set you well on your way to having a website that is…
Optimized for performance.
The amount of time it takes for your website to load matters. Google cares. Your visitors care. You care. I care.
Page load speed is part of Google’s ranking algorithm. Also, the longer your pages take to load, the more your visitors will leave. Its vitally important to load fast.
The single most important decider of page speed is the design of your website. In my opinion, your design should draw attention to your content. That dictates a simple, intelligent, elegant design. Modern web standards allow me to create a content-centric design that – when built efficiently – will typically load in 2 seconds or less.
In addition to a design that loads fast, I utilize a variety of caching and minification methods to create a page load that is as small as possible while putting as little stress on your hosting package as possible.
Performance optimization is an important part of ensuring that your website is…
Built for scale.
I will spend a significant amount of time on your website ensuring that the way I build it is as efficient as possible. I validate all of my code and I am constantly looking for ways to more efficiently accomplish the simple tasks that are required for your website to operate.
If you expect to entertain a large number of visitors, I strongly recommend a third-party service called CloudFlare. Its an excellent service that – among many other benefits – will further minimize your page load which enables your hosting package to handle more visitors.
Of course, I should mention that scaling for massive traffic is dependent upon working with a high quality web host like WP Engine who is built to scale with you as your traffic grows.
Massive traffic is a good problem to have. You’re more likely to have that problem if your website is…
Many of my clients’ website traffic is more than 50% mobile. If your traffic isn’t there yet, it will be as mobile traffic continues to grow year after year. A website that responds to the devices used by your visitors makes a huge difference in your bounce rate…and did I mention that being mobile ready is another criteria in Google’s search algorithm?
I’ve got quite a bit of experience building mobile ready websites and I’ll make you look good whether its on a 27″ desktop monitor, a laptop, tablet or phone.
Of course, none of this really matters if your website isn’t…
Easy to manage.
Your website will come with a custom options panel that will allow you to manage custom elements of your site with ease.
In my opinion – if you so choose – you should be able to manage simple day-to-day changes to your website without writing code or paying expensive rates to myself or another developer to do it for you. In addition to the custom options panel, I work with typical WordPress elements like menus and sidebar widgets whenever possible to ensure that you can essentially drag and drop different elements of your website as you please.
Of course, major changes may necessitate professional assistance, but, again, its important to me that you’re empowered to manage your website as much as possible.
